Comprehensive Minecraft Brewing Guide
Brewing in Minecraft allows you to create powerful potions that grant various effects, from healing and strength to invisibility and fire resistance. Mastering brewing is essential for survival, exploration and combat.
1. The Brewing Stand
The Brewing Stand is the central block for all potion-making.
Crafting Recipe:
- 1 Blaze Rod
- 3 Cobblestone (or Blackstone/Cobbled Deepslate)
Place the Blaze Rod in the center top slot and the three cobblestone blocks in the bottom row of a crafting table.
Fueling the Brewing Stand:
Unlike other crafting stations, the Brewing Stand uses Blaze Powder as fuel.
- 1 Blaze Powder can brew 20 batches of potions.
- Place Blaze Powder in the top-left slot of the Brewing Stand GUI.
2. Basic Brewing Process
Every potion starts with a base, usually the Awkward Potion.
Step-by-Step Brewing:
- Place Fuel: Put Blaze Powder in the top-left fuel slot.
- Place Water Bottles: Put up to three Glass Bottles filled with water in the bottom three slots.
- Place Ingredient: Put the primary ingredient (Nether Wart) in the top-middle slot to create an Awkward Potion.
3. Key Ingredients and Potion Types
Potions are typically brewed in a sequence, starting with an Awkward Potion or, in some cases, directly from a Water Bottle.
A. Base Potions
This is the foundation for almost all other potions.
- Awkward Potion:
- Ingredient: Nether Wart
- Effect Benefits: No effect on its own, but it's the base for almost all positive and many negative potions.
- Recipe: Water Bottle + Nether Wart

6. Trivia & Fun Facts
Although Jeb said that in Java Edition Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3 there would be 161 possible different potion combinations with 2,653 in the future, in the actual third pre-release only 22 different potions could be made without the use of external programs. Of those, 19 potions had one of 8 different effects.
By modifying the item NBT using an editor or commands, it is possible to get a potion that cannot be upgraded into a splash potion.
Mastering these steps and ingredients will turn you into a true alchemist in Minecraft! Happy brewing!
